On the Road/Omaha--Part One

So I've decided to start blogging about trip. So get ready; it will come in installments. I have a few photos from my phone which will tide everyone over until I get the rest from Josh's camera.

DAY 1:Home to Omaha
We loaded up the camper and started toward I-70. First, we had to make a stop at McDonald's because it was free chicken sandwich day. Then it was open road and each other. Highlights from the car ride include seeing a van with a sticker taking up the whole back window that read "Naughty by nature. Freaky by choice." and a truck that had a whole other half of a truck being hauled in it's truck bed. Josh wore his trucker's hat and I tried to do syll-a-cross-tics, which are this really horrible crossword puzzles that use syllables to make words which are the answers to clues. I don't think we finished a single syll-a-cross-tic.

(Nice shades Josh...)

When we realized that we would be having to drive a little ways into Iowa we were greatly disappointed, because Josh and I don't have very high opinions of Iowa after our few months there. (F*** you, fields of opportunities!) We sucked it up though and arrived in Omaha close to 6:00 PM. Did you know that Omaha invented Arbor Day? There was a road sign to prove it. We had some time to kill before we met up with my cousin Jenny, so we decided to find a Red Lobster. (Josh had a gift card.) Feeling tech savvy, I whipped out my Mapquest capable phone and read off the way to get to the closest Red Lobster. We must have made a wrong turn, but discovered that Nebraska has these restaurants called King Kong Burgers.

(This wouldn't be the first time I saw a gorilla on this trip...)

Not disgruntled, we located a Wal-Mart and stocked up on meat and miscellaneous camping supplies (deck of cards, camping chair, can of tuna). We headed back the other way, hoping to find the Red Lobster as it was nearing 7:00 and we were getting pretty damn hungry. Finally, after about an hour of trying to locate the restaurant/stock up at Wal-Mart, we discovered the Red Lobster--but it was on the other side of the street. So Josh had to pull a U-turn in the truck with a camper and we were finally at our destination. We walk in and are seated. We sit, and sit, and sit , and SIT, AND SIT. It is nearing 7:3o and our waitress never came to even take our drink order.
(Restaurant Hell)

So we left. And we went across the street and had the best damn Chipotle of our lives.
(Chipotle, you saved two lives this night.)

After Chipotle, we headed over to Jenny's apartment, where I got to catch up with one of my favorite cousins. She and her husband had recently honeymooned in South Dakota, so they were giving us tips on where to go and what to see. Josh and I went to bed that night with our minds reeling over our upcoming adventure.

Stay tuned for the next installment where Josh and I take on the Omaha Zoo and then drive into the eastern part of South Dakota.
